In a season featuring some fiercely competitive ESFA Divisions, our Senior teams have once again surpassed all Club expectations with no less than 11 of the 16 teams registered in 2019 qualifying for Finals football.
This weekend saw the conclusion of the Semi Final matches. Huge credit to all teams involved. Whether it was a win or loss you’ve done the club proud.
Starting our round-up on Saturday, our AA1(Saturday) team suffered a 3-1 semi final defeat to Dunbar Rovers. All is not lost for Joe Ryan/Lee Crompton’s men. Thanks to their standout 1st place finish during the regular season, they get a second bite of the apple in a preliminary final decider against Glebe Gorillas on Saturday (2:45 PM Waverley Park Synthetic, 31st August). The winner going through to a Grand Final on Saturday the 7th of September against Dunbar.
Brand new to the club in 2019 were our AA3(Saturday) team. Chris Dixon’s plucky outfit came back from a goal behind against an Easts Black team to record a 2-1 victory. Reiss Draper’s second half goal sending the game into extra time and then David Lee sealing the deal with a winner which sees them through to a preliminary final against Maroubra United Green on Saturday (12:30 PM Waverley Park Synthetic, 31st August). The winner will head through to a Grand Final on Saturday the 7th of September against Redfern Raiders.
After finishing a very credible 2nd place in the regular season, Big John Evans “Barmy Army” aka AA5(Saturday) faced off against first placed Easts B in a semi final game that would see the winner book a dream ticket directly through to the Grand final on Saturday September 7th (2 PM Heffron Park Synthetic, 31st August). In a tense encounter our team were fortunate enough to prevail with a 2-1 extra time victory. Well done guys!

Sunday 25th August saw some mixed outcomes for the teams involved in semi final action. Our AAW3, O45, AA3, AA6 and AA7 teams all bowed out gracefully following very hard fought campaigns to qualify for finals football in their respective competitions. Well done on this noteworthy achievement to all involved.
Heffron Field 4 was the location for the narrowest of wins for any of the teams this weekend. Our AA4 Team claiming a decisive penalty shootout win (9-8!) over Heffron Hawks following a game that saw the two teams locked at 1-1 at the end of extra time. Congrats to coach Ben Jones and his men who’ve booked their place in a preliminary final with Randwick next Sunday (1st of Sept) in their first season with the club.
Meanwhile, over on Waverley Synthetic there was fantastic news from coach Dave Kelly and his AAW4 side. Negotiating the step up from Junior to Senior football is never easy, but after finishing 2nd in the regular season, they were able to claim a place in their Grand Final at the first attempt (Sunday the 8th of September 4:30 PM Heffron Park Synthetic Field) following a 3-2 win over table topping Lions. Well done team! The club is exceptionally proud of your efforts in 2019 and the very best of luck in the Grand Final.
Before that game kicked off on Waverley Synthetic, our AAW5s coached and managed by Steve Sheldon and Monica Morrison respectively were in action against Easts. Coming off the back of a narrow Qualifying Final defeat last weekend the team rallied/recovered admirably on Sunday to record a rousing 3-1 triumph and book a preliminary final showdown against South East Eagles on Sunday the 1st of September (9:30 AM Heffron Field 53).
We’d like to take the opportunity to thank all teams hitting Eastern Suburb football fields in our Red and Black striped shirts this season. Junior or Senior, whether your team were lucky enough to make the finals or didn’t, we hope above all you had fun and thanks for trying to play the beautiful game in the right spirit.
